JOURNALING - LACE OR FABRIC SNIPPET STRIPS

A guide to making up Snippet Strips or Rolls. 

 This is the way I have found to be my best option.

  I hand stitch all my strips (not Glue ). 

The featured Strip is 7 cm x 30 cm. 




Starting with a strip of Poplin or soft cotton torn to size. 

 I then add a layer of fabric.  In this case it is just a Cream

 Base, position the images to a place I am happy with. 

Find a selection of Laces and trims, etc., and

 have a play with the Colour, Position and Design.

The next step is to hand-tack down the backing. 

Images and Laces. I find at times the sewing machine is

 suitable but no gathering or tightness this way. 

 Also a slight movement of the piece because of the small

 scale, can be an added bonus.

If you are concerned about fraying, I use the pinking

 shears to trim off the sides. Also if you are not happy 

with this look a narrow lace trim edge can be used. 




Then for the Fun of Slow Stitching, adding beads, 
charms, flowers etc.

Re-creating a flower with a raised centre  as in the Cosmos Tutorial The Silk Ribbon I am using is a  hand dyed Dinky Dyes 4 mm. Wattle. One flower took less  than 1 metre. There are many varieties of Sunflowers with a varying number of petals,  but for this exercise I am  creating  24 Petals. Tutorial - Folded Ribbon Rose

  Once you have mastered  the basic folding  technique  of these Roses,  they can be created from a wide  variety of Ribbons. The photo above shows them in Satin Ribbon, Satin Ribbon / Organza Ribbon Combination  and Organza with  a Gold Thread Edge.    Hand Dyed Silk Ribbon 25 mm. For a much softer effect of course you would use  Silk Ribbon.  The Hand Dyed Silk Ribbons which are available in the wider  sizes are ideal for this.   The variance in colour through the  ribbon becomes  shading in the petals,  making it more  realistic. Ribbon Edged Organza Ribbon  20 mm.  1 :  Cut the Ribbon edge at an angle. Fold the ribbon forward diagonally,  leaving a tail.  2:   Fold over the ribbon starting from  the  right, making a firm centre for the rose.
