Bees and Ladybugs in SRE

Field of Daisies Pincushion Kit

Again we are using Ribbon Stitch, this time to create some

cute bees.

1st: Stitch 3 - 4 Ribbon Stitches overlaping and slightly curved

to give shape to the flower. This is done simply by combining

straight Ribbon Stitches and a few with the needle being placed

to the side of the ribbon to curl and shape.

2nd: Use 2 strands of Black Thread to produce the stripes,

legs, and eyes, these are French Knots - 1 Strand to add the

antenna and stinger.

3rd: The wings here in this example are 7 mm. Organza Ribbon,

Silk can also be used. Add 2 Ribbon Stitches.

Daisy Chain Kit

1st: With an erasable pen I have outlined the

body shape of the Ladybird,then with 3 strands

of black embroidery thread filled it with french knots

with slightly bigger knots in the centre.

I have done this to give a raised

body - optional.

2nd: I added 3 very small ribbon stitches at the tip to

form the head, and 2 ribbon stitches through the

centre of the body. This is to allow for an opening

of the wings in the centre.

The eyes are yellow kreinik thread.

If you have a small seed bead this may be used.

At the time I could not find one small enough.

3rd: Add the legs and feelers in black thread

- 1 strand or metallic thread.

4th: The red Ladybirds are in 4 mm. and the

gold is in 7 mm. Silk Ribbon. With the 7 mm.

I only needed the two ribbon stitches.

The 4 mm. has taken four, 2 each side leaving

a centre gap as though it is about to fly away.

5th: You can now add some spots.

- French Knots or Beads.

No need to replicate nature with these, you

could go way out with bold colours, larger,

add sequins and beads for a more whimsical

or artistic impression.

Have fun with these, add them to your

embroidered gardens and bring

some life to it.

Dragonflies in SRE

Dragonflies have become thoroughly addictive to some.

Collecting them in the form of jewellery, paintings,
adorned containers or boxes, budlights to name a few.

You can't help but admire this delicate agile creature, with its

transparent wings and brightly coloured bodies.

They open up so many possibilities for the embroiderer to

imitate and add them to their craft items.

I have created these 2 dragonflies with

Hand Dyed Silk Ribbons

and have allowed the colours to be the highlight,

along with the bright coloured beads for the body.

You may desire a more subtle appearance

in which case a softer tone Silk Ribbon could be

used.

1st: Gather together some seed beads, bugle beads.
Use these to create the body. I have added a
second smaller bead to the eyes.

These beads are mostly 11/0 to be in proportion
to the size of the wings and have used 7 mm. ribbon.

2nd: Add the wings, starting with the top 2 and then

the bottom pair. Take the ribbon through under the
body keeping them even and in proportion to the

size of the body.

3rd: Add some features as desired, a few french knots

at the tips as shown or embroidery stitches to
imitate the markings. These will also help to

keep the wings fixed to the fabric as it is
such a long Ribbon Stitch.

Butterflies. Dragonflies in SRE

A flower garden cannot survive without a visit from the birds

and bees to pollinate and keep it reproducing beautiful blooms.

I feel that a Silk Ribbon Embroidery is enhanced by the addition of

Butterflies, Dragonflies, Bees, Bugs, Spiders and even Ants.

You could add a charm, lace motif or go one step further
with Silk Ribbons, Threads and Beads.
These small items are great for

using those small lengths of ribbon. No need to limit them
to your Garden Scenes, add as an embellishment to
other items you have made.
(eg. Baby's Clothing, on a bodice, headband, lingerie,
gift satchels, crazy patch. )

Butterflies: If you do not feel confident at doing these

free hand, do a simple sketch to help

keep it in proportion. Before you begin, decide on

the size, the body shape, whether you would like

to use the same size Silk Ribbon ( 7mm. for the

top wings and 4 mm for the lower are my preference.)

The colours are numerous, so go wild or match it

to your embroidery.
A Google Image search on Butterflies will give
you loads of inspiration.

1st. Stitch the body with a basic straight / satin stitch.

(My preference is Kreinik Thread, which adds

some bling and reflection of light, plus I just

love the colours available) then add 2 stitches for

the antenna.

2nd. Start with the wings at the top, doing a ribbon stitch

and then a corresponding one on the other side.

Work your way down to the tail.

3rd. Add any decoration for the markings on the wings.

( French Knots - silk threads or metallic, beads, sequins).

4th. If a side version add a few stitches for the legs.

Kacoonda Floppy Feet

Hello Fellow SRE Enthusiasts,

I would love to introduce you to a new kit in the Kacoonda Range.
Those international visitors to my blog, may not have heard of Kacoonda previously.
This is an Australian company specialising in Hand Dyed Silk Ribbon available in 4mm.
through to 32 mm. widths.with matching hand dyed threads in a large colour range.
Plus a variety of hand dyed felts.
I shall be introducing some of these products to Daisys Garden Online store shortly.
Meanwhile I have listed the Floppy Feet Pincushion Kit designed by the talented Monica Spicer. Have a

Spanish Lavender in Silk Ribbon

Here is another Lavender Variety,
created by using simple
Ribbon Stitches and French Knots.

For the three flowers:
1 metre of each Cascade House
Silken Ribbon 4990 and 5300
30 cms. Green Silken Ribbon 7560
30 cms. of Sullivans 7 mm Mauve

Step 1: Mark out a simple outline for the stems and
flower body.
Chain Stitch using 3 strands DMC 647 Embroidery Thread
for the stem and then I have wrapped it with another
3 strands.
This gives it a slightly rounded and raised appearance.

Step 2: Fill the ovals with French Knots starting with the paler
Silken Ribbon scattered randomly and then add a few more in
the deeper Lavender Colour.
I try not to pull these as tight, so they
will sit above the others to create a layer effect.

Step 3: After completing the 3 Flower Heads add some
larger Wings at the tip with 7 mm. Mauve.
These can be varied from 1 - 3 Ribbon Stitches
some flat with others twisted to add to the appearance.

Step 4: Lastly add long narrow leaves to the lower
ends of the stem.

As with the earlier Lavender Tutorial add this to small

gifts, just adorable as a decoration to a pouch filled

with Dried Lavender.

Great Idea for a Mothers Day gift and more personal

as your own creation.

Lavender in Silk Ribbon

Lavender a flower quite often worked in Silk Ribbon Embroidery

on Perfume Satchets, Pillows, gifts bags etc.

It is an easy flower to replicate in SRE and can be created in a

few different ways. You may have seen a much simpler design

with the flower petals fanning out as a leaf.

However, I prefer to put a little more effort into the

design myself. So this is my impression of Lavender.

Step 1: Mark out a simple design as below, these

are then worked in Stem Stitch with 2 strands of

embroidery thread.

Step 2: The flower heads are created in this instance with

4 mm. Cascade House Silken Ribbon 5300

Ribbon Stitch beginning at the tip of the stalk and working

backwards up the stem. Have the hoop with the flower tip closest to you.

Step 3: Each Ribbon Stitch is made at a slight angle, loose

and full ( not flat on the fabric ) .

This is acheived by making a larger petal than required

and then pushing it back to give a slight rise in the ribbon

The Petals can be coming from each side of the

Stem Stitch Branch, but in this example I have

taken some across the stitching and then

the alternate stitch is tucked in under it.

I feel this makes it appear more dimensional

and hides some of the stem.

after all you would not see all the stem in the real flower.

I prefer to alternate the stitches rather than working

down one side and then the other.

Step 4: Embroider all the flower heads, keeping them

as uniform in size as possible.

Step 5: Add Ribbon Stitch Leaves as shown.

in 4 mm. Cascade House Silken Ribbon 7560

Step 6: An option is to add a Bud with Ribbon Stitches overlapping

and a few green leaves at the base.

Step 7: Add a co-ordinating ribbon to tie off in a bow,

Place the ribbon through the eye of the needle only

Take it through the one side of the stems and back out.

Make a sweet little bow.

Cascade House Silken Ribbon is an Australian Product which can be
purchased from Daisys Garden, a deeper lavender is 4990
Dinky Dyes Lilac is another option a lovely Hand Dyed Pure Silk Ribbon

Rose Loveheart Blanket

Could also be embroidered with Two Hearts intertwined.

Stitches Used: Stem Stitch, Spider Web Rose,
Detached Chain, Ribbon Stitch, Running

Stitch / Colonial Knot Combination., Y Stitch.

Instructions: Pre-wash the ribbons, then when dry, iron on a
silk setting before starting.

To transfer the design onto fleece, I suggest using netting
or light organza and a pencil. Trace the design on this from the pattern, then

with a dressmakers chalk or water erasable pen transfer it to
the fleece. You may find though that the pen, is a little more difficult
to remove from the fleece.

Firstly using Embroidery Cotton Thread ( 2 strands ) stem stitch
the outline of the heart. ( Or for a more raised frame, wrapped
chain )

Cut a piece of wadding the size of the blanket, and tack it to the fleece.
Take matching cotton thread and make a spoke for the spider web
rose, one at a time and embroider.
So as not to get the ribbon tangled in the other threads.

Spider Web Roses:
After making the spoke, do not cut thread, leave it at the back of your

work. Thread ribbon 25 cm in length onto Chenille Needle supplied.
Bring it up to the centre of one of the spokes, leaving a short tail
at the back of the fabric.
Stitch down with thread.

Twist the ribbon and thread through the spokes. When completed bring needle

to back of fabric, carefully take ribbon through wadding and stitch down. Should you have

enough ribbon on the needle, you can take the needle over to a position to do a bud. ( At

least 10 cm. Ribbon left on the needle to do this. )

Complete all Spider Web Roses in this way.

Stem Stitch in Green thread, the stems of the Leaves. Place fabric now in Embroidery Hoop.

All the other stitching can be done with fabric in the hoop.

Detached Chain Buds: This stitch is the same as Lazy Daisy in Thread. Cut Ribbon no

longer than 25 cm. And make the buds in each group. With green thread make small straight

stitches at the tips and Y stitch around the bud and add a stem.

Ribbon Stitch Leaves: With green ribbon make all the leaves, be careful not to pull the

ribbon after each one, best if you keep your finger on the last completed stitch while you are

making your next.

Running Stitch / Colonial Knot Combination: Follow the instructions given, wrapping the

ribbon around the needle, hold that firm and make small running stitches down to the base

of the ribbon. Pull through as in colonial knots, taking it slowly and let the ribbon run

through under your finger, so it doesn't curl and knot. Pull gently and keep an eye on it, you

will see the centre form as you do so. ( Should you have problems with this, use a large

French Knot in the ribbon )

Final Step is to make the bead flowers. Stitch the centre coloured bead down first and then

string the others on to the thread and stitch into a circle. Add stitches between to keep flat.

Make up Blanket with backing and trim as you wish. Ribbon Embroidery can be hand-

washed in a soft washing detergent. Should the ribbon droop slightly, hold a STEAM IRON

above it and the steam should lift it slightly. Do Not press the ribbon once you have stitched

it in.

This can be any size you wish, copy and
enlarge to whatever size you desire.

Running Stitch / Colonial Knot is worked the
same way as Running Stitch / French Knot.
Colonial Knot is contructed in a figure 8
and will give a higher centre to the flower.

Detached Chain Free Designs

Flower combinations in 4 mm . Silk Ribbon

These are from a discontinued Introductory Kit.
Satin -n-Cream on a Baby Quilt or for Doll Collectors.
But I am sure you will find many other uses.

----OOPS- ignore this

The single stem was added at each corner of the quilt.

The design above was a feature on the edge of a pillowslip.

Stitches Used: Stem Stitch, Lazy Daisy Stitch, Detached Chain & Y Stitch.

Detached Chain is the same stitch as Lazy Daisy only done

in ribbon. There are two ways to stitch these. One is with the fabric in the frame, in

which case the needle and ribbon will have to be taken through in a

horizontal position. Or option two out of the hoop freehand, if doing it this way, be

careful to not gather up the material. With a hoop it is easier to keep the material

firm.

To keep the petals flat, put a finger through the loop and make sure the

ribbon is not twisted, before pulling the needle through, this will give the petals a

flatter appearance. Complete all the daisy's, then stitch down the beads for the centre.

With 1 strand of the thread, stem stitch the stems to the buds, Y stitch around the base

of the bud and two straight stitches for the calyx. Next add some lazy daisy leaves,

in 1 strand also. ( You may place these where there is a gap in the petals and on the

stems ).

Foxgloves in Silk Ribbon

Foxgloves - A Beautiful Majestic Flower.

I have used photos taken at the Carnival for inspiration, as

where I live in the sub tropics they are never seen.

Embroidered using Dinky Dyes 7 mm. Strawberry Ice.

This ribbon has varying shades from soft pink to a crisp

white. Leaves are in 7 mm. Sullivans Moss.

Because of the loose nature of this stitch, you will

require approx. 60 cms. of Silk Ribbon for each completed

flower. I feel it is worth it though, don't you.

Step 1: Embroidery thread to match the Green Ribbon,

work a row of Stem Stitches for the stalk approx. 7 cms.

Step 2: With the 7 mm. Pink Ribbon I have made each flower

head with a very loose French Knot, taking the

needle back through the ribbon at the base.

Taper the flower heads, starting with 4 at the base, then

3, thinning out at the tip for the new buds.

Step 3: I have added Fly Stitches in the green thread, around the

new buds to the stalk.

Step 4: Add French Knots ( 3 wraps ) in Kreinik Metallic Thread

in each flower head. ( Leave the smaller knots ) .

Step 5: Leaves in Ribbon Stitch.

FREE SRE DESIGN - Spider Web Combinations

Here are some simple combinations for this simple stitch.

Stitches Used: Spider Web Rose, Stem Stitch, Lazy Daisy Stitch, French Knots,

Ribbon Stitch, Straight Stitch, Detached Chain Stitch.

Ribbons: Spider Web Roses – Two Tone 4 mm. Pale Pink & Pink Ribbon

Rose Leaves – Green Ribbon – 4 mm.

French Knot Flowers -- DMC Rayon Floss Lilac and Cream

Stem & Leaf - Stem Stitch – DMC Thread Green

Straight Stitch at Rosebud Tip – DMC Thread

( Or Threads of your choice )

The Rosebuds are worked in Detached Chain Stitch, with three small ribbon stitches in

green ribbon for the Sepals. Thread Crewel Needle with Pink Embroidery Thread and

make 2 small straight stitches at the top of the bud.

French Knot Flowers: 2 Strands of Lilac and 3 wraps.

Centre: 2 Strands of Cream and 3 wraps make the centre.

Next stem stitch the vines to make the circle ---

Lazy Daisy leaves in Thread at each French Knot Flower.

Do the Spider Web Rose last

( this avoids getting the threaded

needle caught on the exposed Spider Web Ribbon )

Finally complete by doing Rose Leaves in Ribbon Stitch, coming

from under the rose.

Spider Web Rose is a very quick stitch and can be varied by changing the

combinations around it. Suitable for delicate work such as accessories for

the bride, lingerie, baby's clothes, and any item of a delicate nature.

Sunflowers in Silk Ribbon Embroidery

Hi Everyone,

Sorry it has been so long. You know what it is like,

not enough hours in the day.

You have your day planned out and

then *** bingo, it takes a whole new direction.

These days most of my time seems to be taken

up with administration and not so much time

actually doing SRE. It is so peaceful to just

spend the time working with Silk Ribbons,

sometimes I even get withdrawal symptoms.

I took some photos of these brilliant
Sunflowers while in Brisbane

earlier this year.

So large bright and cheery, even
with showers threatening

overhead.

The Silk Ribbon I am using is a

hand dyed

Dinky Dyes 4 mm. Wattle.

Available from
Daisys Garden Online.

One flower took less
than 1 metre.

There are many varieties of
Sunflowers with a varying

number of petals,

but for this exercise I am
creating 24 Petals.

So logically you need to average

6 petals in each quarter, slightly

crossing over into the next.

Step 1: On Main Fabric -
Mark out a circle for the
Full Version with a diameter of
3.5 cms. ( 1 1/4 inches )
and an inner circle of 1.5 cms.
(1/2 inch ).
Button: As per the Cosmos
Tutorial make the centre of the
Sunflower, by working it
separately on a piece
of calico or cotton.
(Placed firmly in a Hoop )
marking the area the same
size 1.5 cms. ( 1/2 inch).

Step 2: Using Embroidery Thread,
fill the calico button with
French Knots.

Inner area:
Firm French Knots :- 2 wraps
2 strands Green
1 Strand Mustard Yellow.
Outer area:
Loose Knots :- 3 wraps
2 strands Brown
1 strand Mustard Yellow.
Cut around as shown.

Step 3: With double Sewing Thread
make small tacking stitches approx.
5 mm. from the Knots and gather
the calico neatly underneath, tie
off securely, so it does not loosen.
Leave cotton and embroidery
threads attached. Put aside.

Step 4: Main Fabric.
Proceed with Ribbon Stitches
starting at the inner marked circle,
and ending with the needle
through just outside the outer circle.
Not every petal has to be perfect, make
some folded or twisted, for a more
realistic flower head.

Step 5: With all the Petals
completed it may not look
effective, but it will
once you have added the
premade button.

Place it in the centre stitching down
firmly with the sewing thread.

Add tacking stitches with the
matching embroidery threads around
the outside, so that the calico does
not show through.

Step 6:
Leaves added in 13 mm. Bottle Green Silk Ribbon
appearing from between the flower petals.

Another option for Sunflower is to create
the Ribbon Stitches as shown and add
Seed Beads for the Centre.

Cosmos in Silk Ribbon Embroidery

Cosmos Flowers are stitched using

Dinky Dyes Argyle 7 mm. Silk Ribbon

I must apologise for the delay in getting this tutorial
online. My left index finger had a slight mishap with
a sharp knive, thus removing a piece of skin.
Needless to say you probably all have tried to work
with a sore finger and bandaid, but for me does not
give the best results.

Sunflowers and Cosmos are two flowers which come to mind

for this effect. When you are replicating a flower with

a raised centre, in the case of Cosmos, Dahlias, Daisies

etc. the pistils in the centre of the flower are quite prominent.

Firstly, decide on the size of the full flower, sketch it onto the

fabric. Leaving an inner circle.

To create these pistils the easiest I find is to use a small square

of calico, placed very firmly and taut in an embroidery hoop.

With a pencil make a circle the size that you wish for the centre

of the flower, allowing a little extra to cover where the ribbon

petals have begun.

You now have 2 Options:

1. French Knots in Embroidery Thread.

2. Small seed beads.

1. Mark a circle the required size on calico.

2. Fill this area with French Knots, using

Embroidery Thread. In this eg. 2 strands

of thread and 3 wraps of the needle for

each one.

With 7 mm. Ribbon construct the Flower

petals in Ribbon Stitch. Work clockwise

overlapping each one. In the case of the

Cosmos Flower keep the tip as

rounded as possible Whereas if it was a

Daisy or Sunflower they would be finer and

more pointed.

3. Mark another circle outside of this

to give you a gathering line.

Thread a needle with a double sewing

cotton to match the yellow.

You may wish to cut the calico into a

smaller piece at this point, so as it will

not be too bulky when set down in the

flower .

Gather the calico up with the thread and sew

down the fabric as flat as possible. ( As you

would when covering a button. )

4. With this needle still attached, take it

through the centre of your ribbon petals

and stitch it down firmly.

Should you feel there are some empty

spaces, add a few more French Knots

in the Yellow Embroidery Thread.

5. Next step if you wish to show the

stems, add this with twisted 4 mm.

couched down in places to stop it

unravelling.

The buds are Ribbon Stitch in 4 mm. Yellow

with Green 4 mm. Calyx.

The leaves I have stitched using 4 mm. Green

in Ribbon Stitch, by completing it the same

way as you would with a Satin Stitch Leaf.

( They could also be a simple Ribbon Stitch

or made from Embroidery Thread. )

I shall be away next week for a holiday

staying with friends in Alice Springs the Red Centre

of Australia. Hopefully I will be able to show

you many photos of the wildflowers following

the heavy rains they have received.

Detached Chain in Silk Ribbon

In my earlier posting, the photo instructions

were mainly focused on Lazy Daisy Stitch.

So I thought you might like to see a more

detailed tutorial in Silk Ribbon.

Satin - n - Cream Quilt Kit

Detached Chain Flower spray to adorn a Satin Baby Quilt.

Could also be added to any Bridal Accessories.

Detached Chain Stitch is executed in much the same way as Lazy Daisy.

It is best if you only use between 2 and 4 mm ribbons in this stitch.

The wider ones are more difficult to shape.

The material may be held in an Embroidery Hoop or free in the hand.

Most of my students have found it easier to use the hoop to begin with,

leaving both hands free to work the ribbon.

When using a hoop it is difficult to take the needle diagonally

across the fabric. The fabric being taut your fingers will suffer,

and I am sure you won't want to leave blood stains on your work.

If doing this free hand take care that the fabric is not gathering

as you stitch.

When using the ribbon I personally prefer the ribbon
to be flattened out and smooth.

This gives a fuller petal. Whereas if you leave it

with a twist then you get a thinner petal.

For an example here I have crossed the ribbon over at the top

and did not straighten out the ribbon.

Not the same desired effect, do you agree.

The length of your first petal will determine the size of the

completed flower. By having a longer petal, in turn you

need a greater number of petals to fill the circle.

Place a finger into the loop before pulling it through

and straigten out the ribbon.

Take it a little slower than if you were working with thread,

and you will have more control over the shaping of the petal.

By taking the needle back through beyond

the loop, you will be making a slight tip to

the petal.

I have only created six petals to this

flower, it would have been possible

to add a seventh. ( with 4 mm. ribbon )

Instead I have filled the space with a

leaf in the same stitch. By placing it

further down, and with the addition

of a pearl, the flower takes shape.

Daisy Spray for Beginners

Everything you will need to create your
first Silk Ribbon Embroidery.

In Embroidery Thread Stem Stitch the stalk of the
leaf and add Detached Chain Leaves.

Also can be used for buds as in the Rosebud
Tutorial.

So many uses for this Stitch, you will see it
quite often in Silk Ribbon Embroidery.

Water Erasable Pens

Removal of Pen.

It is always recommended that the ink from your pen
is completely removed from the fabric.

There has been some research of late especially for patchwork
and the effect the ink will have on the fabric over the years.
A concern to those ladies who have spent months or years
creating a quilt for the present time or as a family heirloom.

Myself, if I have a cotton blend, I just dab it with a wet
cotton bud until it disappears.
With a Satin or Silk I find that once I use this method
the ink bleeds through and makes it worse.

So the best advise I can give you is this.
When the work is completed and still in the hoop place it under
a slow running cold water tap until the ink has completely
disappeared and leave to dry. By leaving the fabric in the hoop
you will have limited disturbance to the embroidery.

(Rearrange the ribbon when still wet if necessary and if
when it has dried you are still concerned, steam is an option
to reshape the silk ribbon.)

There are other types of markers available, and I shall do some
more research on the matter for a later posting.

Rosebuds

Detached Chain / Ribbon Stitch

in 4 mm. Silk Ribbon

Basis of this rosebud is a Detached Chain Stitch,

keep the ribbon as flat as possible to obtain a

full bud.

Stem Stitch is added in embroidery thread.

Two ribbon stitches to form the calyx.

Two small straight stitches at the tip

of the bud in green thread

( or the colour of the bud ).

Ribbon Stitch Bud

in 4 mm and 7 mm. Silk Ribbon

Create two Ribbon Stitches ( 7 mm )

Slightly crossing over at the tip.

Like an almond shape.

Make calyx from 4 mm. Green Ribbon

in Ribbon Stitch. Create the two outside

stitches first then the centre stitch.
Once again two straight stitches at the tip.

Folded Rose / Gathered Combination

Should you wish to create as above, first

stem stitch the stem of the rose.

Step 1: Refering to the Tutorial for Folded Ribbon Rose

Create in 7 or 13 mm. Silk Ribbon a small Folded Ribbon

Rose for the centre.

Put aside keeping the threaded needle attached.

Step 2: With water erasable pen, mark a small circle.

Thread a 20 cm length of the ribbon into

the eye of the needle. ( No need to thread completely

as this is only to draw the ribbon through the fabric).

Step 3: As in the Carnation Tutorial gather the

ribbon into petals, stitching each down.

Follow the outside of the circle marked

and you have the option of two rows

of gathering as I have done or just one.

Step 4: Re-thread the ribbon in the

Chenille Needle.

Take the ribbon through to the back. At the

same time the last gathered petal is stitched into

place. With a wet cotton bud, wash out the

pen line. Allow to dry.

Step 5: Make a whole in the centre of the

gathered ribbon.

Step 6: Take the threaded needle through first.

Push the tails of the folded rose through to the

back, gently pull into position.

Stitch down with the thread at

the back of your fabric.

Step 7: With 7 mm. Green Ribbon add

Ribbon Stitch Leaves.

Rosebud in a future Tutorial.

As part of the class sampler the embroidered

rose at the top of the Tutorial has been scrunched,

packed and examined for 3 years and I feel still

looks presentable.

Tutorial - Folded Ribbon Rose

Once you have mastered the basic folding technique of these Roses,

they can be created from a wide variety of Ribbons.

The photo here shows them made in Satin Ribbon,

Satin Ribbon / Organza Ribbon Combination and Organza with

a Gold Thread Edge.

Hand Dyed Silk Ribbon 25 mm.

For a much softer effect of course you would use Silk Ribbon.

The Hand Dyed Silk Ribbons which are available in the wider

sizes are ideal for this. The variance in colour through the

ribbon becomes shading in the petals, making it much more

realistic.

Ribbon Edged Organza Ribbon 20 mm.

Step 1: Cut the Ribbon edge at an angle.

Fold the ribbon forward diagonally,

leaving a tail.

Step 2: Fold over the ribbon starting from

the right, making a firm centre for the rose.

Stitch to hold in matching thread.

( For this tutorial I have a different colour

thread to make it easier for you to see ).

Step 3: Fold the ribbon diagonally to the

back.

Step 4: Wrap the fold around the
rose centre, each one of the folds

becomes a petal.

Continue in this way until you have
the desired size rose.

Take care not to have all the folds on the one

side of your rose. On the outer petals as the

rose is growing in size, you may need to gather

the ribbon at the base a little to prevent this.

Step 5: On the last fold stitch the ribbon

to the base and cut off at an angle.

Notice how the gold thread alternates

through the petals. The same with

combining two ribbons such as Satin

and Organza.

Hint: Should you be concerned about wastage

of Ribbon, an alternative is to replace this with

crepe paper double fold.

This paper holds firm without stitching

by pressing the folds in place. Allows you

to have a few practice runs.

Be patient in time you will be able to do them

with very little effort.

Pinking Blade

A tool I use often. When you are dealing with Silks, Satins and other

fabrics that easily fray, so quick and handy to do the edges.

Great when doing Crazy Patchwork.

It can also be used to trim the edges of paper, the same as if using

pinking shears.

Tutorial - Poinsettia in Silk Ribbon

These are just a few samples of flowers I

have embroidered on Christmas Stockings.

Option 1: As I have done with these flowers,
is to make them in detached chain.
( Much simpler and quicker alternative )
Make a slightly longer peak at each tip.

Poinsettia in Ribbon Stitch

You will require approximately .3 Metre of 7 mm. Red Ribbon
for each flower, .2 Metre of 7 mm. Green Ribbon,
Gold Seed Beads, Metallic Gold Thread.

Step 1: Mark out a circle 2 cms across and small dot
in the centre.

Step 2: Place Ribbon Stitches around this circle.
Some to the outline and a few outside of the circle.

Step 3: Make second layer of Ribbon Stitches
overlapping the first petals, and of varying lengths.
You may also have these slightly puffed up in
comparison to flat against the fabric.

Place a few leaves in the green ribbon in between
the petals.

This is just a simple daisy in Variegated Gold 7 mm. Ribbon
A gold bead in the centre and two Ribbon Stitch Leaves.

Step 4: Add the gold seed beads in the centre.
And for a little more sparkle I have added a Fly
Stitch in the gold metallic thread around the petals.

These can also be created in Cream Ribbon with
Green Leaves and Gold Beads and Thread.

You will require: 2 Metres 7 mm. Dk Apricot Silk Ribbon

.5 Metre of DMC Metallic Thread or substitute.

Small Butterfly Charm

Seed Beads

Step 1: The Flowers are worked first in 7 mm. using Ribbon

Stitch. in a clockwise manner.

Step 2: With 1 strand of the metallic gold, small straight stitches

coming out from the centre of the flowers. Stitch 3 or 4 Seed

Beads into the centre.

Step 3: Buds are in Ribbon Stitch also.

Step 4: Stem Stitch from the Buds to the Flower Heads,

and one fly stitch around the base of the Bud.

Step 5: Lazy Daisy leaves in metallic thread with some

scattered around the outside of the flower spray.

Step 6: Stitch down the butterfly charm, with gold

Sewing thread.

Step 1: Create the Centre of the Spider Roses in Dk Apricot, then change to

the Paler colour. Make sure you stay in sequence when changing ribbons.

Step 2: The buds are Detached Chain Stitch, leaving a longer tip when

taking the needle back through. This will be part of the rose tip.

Step 3: Place a Y stitch around the base of the bud and continue on

with stem stitch across to the Full Rose. Place 2 small straight stitches at the

tip of the rose bud in green thread.

Step 4: Leaves are in Ribbon Stitch.

Step 1: The Spider Roses. The larger one and

the top rose are one straight colour.

The 3 rd. Rose is Pink in the centre with a lighter

colour on the outside.

Step 2: Next work the buds in Detached Chain Stitch.

Add 2 straight stitches at the tip in Green Thread.

Step 3: Green Thread - Stem Stitch all the stems to

the buds and leaf stems.

Lazy Daisy Leaves on the two branches.

Step 4: Rose and Bud :Leaves in Ribbon Stitch.

Step 5: Fly stitch scattered in 1 strand of the

tan thread.

Baby's Breath.

Step 2: With 2 strands of Embroidery Thread

create small leaves in Lazy Daisy Stitch, coming

from between or under the flowers.

Step 3: Sew on Seed Beads in any gaps

remaining.

Here is a simple design that I have added to the
collar of a girls dress. ( Size 3 )
Of course you may wish to use it in another application.

The colours are just as a suggestion.

Whatever ribbon scraps you have in your

sewing box could be used.

Ribbons: 4 mm.- Pink, Lemon, Blue, Yellow, Green, Pink /Purple.
Threads: Green, Yellow & Lilac Embroidery Threads.
Beads: Small Pearls for the Daisy Centre.

Place pellon at the back of the area to be Embroidered,
with tacking stitches to hold the two together.

Step 1: Stem Stitch the fern stalk and
lazy daisy leaves. ( 2 Strands)
Step 2: In a circular movement make Ribbon Stitches in Pink
for the centre daisy. Stitch the Pearl into the Centre.
Step 3: Small Ribbon Stitch Flowers with 5 petals in
Lemon Ribbon.
Step 4: French Knots in Blue Ribbon ( 3 Wraps )
four knots per flower. Yellow thread french knot for the
centre, using 1 strand of thread.
Step 5: Place 2 Green Ribbon Stitch Leaves between
the petals of the larger daisy as shown in design.
Step 6: With Purple / Pink Ribbon work one Running Stitch/
French Knot Combination.
Step 7: Using 1 Thread of the Lilac Embroidery Thread,
three wraps. place small french knots around the outside
of the flowers.

Tutorial- Carnations in Silk Ribbon Embroidery

These are some interesting facts that I have just discovered about Carnations.

It is the January Birth Flower
Stands for Fascination and Woman's Love
Is a member of the Dianthus Family
from the Greek Words
Dios - God Zeus and anthus - Flower
( The flower of God )
If you are considering an embroidery
project for someone special, you may
like to consider these for choosing a Carnation
Colour.

Pink Carnation - Mother's Love
Light Red Carnation - Admiration
Dark Red - Deep Love and Woman' Affection
White - Pure Love and Good Luck
( No wonder they are a prominent flower for
Weddings )

I am working this in Cascade House Bias Silk Ribbon 10 mm.
For the 1 Flower as shown you will require approximately:
               .5 Metre 10 mm. Bias
               .5 Metre of 4 mm. Green Ribbon
               .5 Metre of Green Embroidery Thread.

Step 1: Using an erasable pen mark out the stem of the flower.
With 2 strands of Emb.Thread stitch this in Chain Stitch.

Step 2: Wrap the Chain with 2 strands of the same thread.
This gives a more raised stem for the carnation.
( Whipped Chain Stitch )

( In this instance the flower is formed by stitching from the

outside of the circle and finished off in the centre.)

Step 3: Mark a circle for the flower head. I have allowed
2.5 cms. diameter. Bring the ribbon up through just inside
the outer edge of the circle.
( So the entry point of the ribbon
will be covered by the next row of gathering )
With matching sewing thread run small gathering stitches
2 cms long along the base of the ribbon, pull in to form
a petal and stitch down to the fabric with a few small
tacking stitches.

Step 4: Continue with the gathered petals for 2 layers.
As you get to the centre, take the gathering through the
centre of the ribbon, not the base. This will make
the petals smaller and tighter for the centre of the flower.

Step 5: The Buds are made the same way with
small gathering stitches. I have 3 lots of
gathering, but have placed it one on top of the
other. (covering a smaller area but giving more height. )

Step 6: Three small ribbon stitches are placed with the
green ribbon at the base of the bud, and a Detached
Chain Stitch for the new bud. Leaves are Ribbon
Stitch.

It is possible to do this flower in 7 mm. or 13 mm Ribbon,
just alter the size of the circle to suit.
I have also made these with organza ribbon, or an organza
and silk ribbon combination. ( eg. 13 mm Organza with the
7 mm. Silk Ribbon - tacked together first at the base. )

Tutorial - Delphiniums in Silk Ribbon Embroidery

Delphiniums

Delphiniums are a hardy perennial, beautiful and tough.They are normally associated with large, English-style gardens. Tall and stately, delphinium flowers come in purple, white, pink and blue.

Not a flower you would find in the area where I live, but I still enjoy embroidering them in ribbon.
As a group in an embroidery, varying in height and colour, they are so effective.

Hand Dyed Ribbons work well with these, the colours change as you create.

You will need:

7 mm. Ribbon - colour of choice
( solid or hand dyed ) Approx. 1 Metre
7 mm. Green Ribbon - 1 length
Green Embroidery Thread
Ecru, white or cream Embroidery Thread.

Step 1: Work a line of stem stitch for the centre stalk .
Mine is 5 cms. in length. Not necessary to be a straight line.
After all, the Delphiniums are not perfectly straight.

Step 2: With 7 mm. Ribbon, the flower heads are made
with a very loose, 1 wrap French Knot. Take the wrapped
needle back through the Ribbon close to the fabric as below.

Step 3: Place the Flower Heads in an uneven pattern
starting from the base for approx. 3 cms. Now make
the French Knots a little tighter and smaller at the tip.
Leaving some of the Green Stem showing.

Step 4: With 2 Strands of ecru, place 2 wrap
French Knots in the centre of the Flower heads.
The Base wraps are loose, getting tighter at the tip as
in the ribbon. Miss the top Knots, as being
the bud, the centre of the flower would not
be seen.

Step 5: A few French Knots are now added to the
tip and the spaces between the Flower Heads
in the Green Thread.
Step 6: I have added some more stem stitch to the
base and Ribbon Stitch Leaves.

The French Knots help to keep the Flower Heads
more securely in place, even when washing.
The example is in 7 mm. Ribbon, but is just as
easy to do in 4 mm. ribbon as I have done with
the Mon Francais Jardin - Wheelbarrow Kit.

Tutorial - Snowdrops in Silk Ribbon Embroidery

SNOWDROP OR SNOWFLAKE ( Galanthus )

The classic winter flowering plant.

When the snowdrop flowers appear, spring is not far away.

You will require for this flower.
4 mm. White Silk Ribbon,
4 mm. Green Silk Ribbon,
Matching Green Embroidery Thread.

Step 1: Either create the stalk free hand
or pre mark it with an erasable pen.
With 2 strands of Embroidery Thread
create the stalks in Stem Stitch.

Step 2: Flowers consist of 2 or 3 ribbon stitches
facing downwards.
Leave a gap between
the Stem Stitch and where the needle is taken
through. This is later covered by a small Ribbon
Stitch in the Green Ribbon. Pull the ribbon angle gently
to a point. I have stitched the 2 outside petals
first and then placed the 3 rd in the centre.

Step 3: Place small Ribbon Stitches from the
stalk into the tip of the Flower Petals.
Take care when pulling the Ribbon through,
the Petals. By placing your finger firmly against
them, while the Green Ribbon is passing through,

( 1 or 2 Ribbon Stitches can be used, but keep them
close together.)

Step 4: Leaves, of different lengths in
a long Ribbon Stitch coming from the
base.
With 2 strands of the green thread,
place a 1 wrap knot at the point of
each petal tip.

Crisp, pure and white.

Crazy Patch Embellishing

I have added Ribbon Stitch Flowers in 7 mm
Mauve Ribbon with blue seed beads and 7 mm
Green Ribbon Stitch Leaves to a Lace trim.
A gold bee charm sits on top.

A little difficult getting the ribbon to got through
all the layers, but if you have a needle grabber
or other gripping pad, it will help.

It certainly is worth the trouble as you get another
dimension to your work.

Leaves in Silk Ribbon Embroidery

Leaves an essential in SRE Embroidery.

There are many ways to create leaves.
These are just a few of the ones I have done.

Detached chain

leaves with Stem Stitch.
The length of the tip is decided by where you
take the needle back through.

Detached Chain with a Bullion Wrap

Gives a more pointed leaf.

Bring ribbon through and take the needle back in
at the entrypoint and out again as shown.

Make sure the ribbon is flat. Make 1 or more wraps
around the needle.

Hold knots firm with a finger as you pull the ribbon
through. Take needle back through the fabric at the
tip.

Can also be used for flower petals such as Poinsietta
or Australian Flannel Flower. Any flower that has
a pronounced point.

Ribbon Stitch.

Use the stitches to form the shape of the Leaf.

Ribbon Stitch in Organza Ribbon.
Use thread to show the veins in
the leaf.
Great for adding to Larger Folded
Ribbon Roses.

This should give you a wider variety
once added to the stitches already
shown in the previous tutorials.

The other option is stitching
in Embroidery Thread, we can delve into
this at a later date.

These are photos of Wearable Art exhibited by Julie Thornton
a textile artist based in Rockhampton. Julie has received National

to take photos of her dresses, bags, shoes etc. to show you what
I was totally in awe of when I first walked into the Art Gallery.

There are many more photos, so I shall add them to my blog over the
next few weeks.

I feel Julie can be an inspiration to us all.
With a dressmaking background she has taken her stitching
in hand and machine embroidery
into a whole new creative world.

The avenues for Embellishing your garments are endless as
you will see in the photos I will be adding.

As an artist, your creativity is found in your use of fabric,
beads, fibres, lace and embroidery and Colour with which
to obtain a unique artwork.

As Julie has said " An important moment was discovering the exciting
technique of free machine embroidery, which opened up a whole new
world of possibilities for her to create these unique gowns".

She has also used Silk Ribbon Embroidery in different features of these art works.

In my tutorials I have been concentrating on the Basic Stitches and Flowers for the
time being, but there are so many applications for Silk Ribbon Embroidery. These

Silk Ribbon Embroidery - Crazy Patch / Quilting

Silk Ribbon Embroidery can be applied to many styles of Craft,
one of which is Crazy Patchwork.

Embellishing your Crazy Patch with SRE, adds another dimension
to your projects, and gives such a wide variety of adornments.

Having a problem finding a trim, braid or a feature. Create your own.

Ribbons come in so many colours, widths and blends, that you are simply
able to create a flower or seam embellishment to fit your project.

Judith Baker Montano is a prominent embroiderer in this area, and has
shown in her work and publications, how beautiful it can be as an
embellishment.

I have only been into Crazy Patch for a short time.
May I say not because of the lack of interest, but for the shortage of
time at this stage. So I am just showing you a piece I have stitched
as a display to visitors at my stalls. At this stage I am not too sure what it will become in the future. I shall have to wait for the inspiration to flow.
The main reason that I have developed this blog is to encourage
a resurgence in Embroidery and I feel that Silk Ribbon is an excellent
way for the beginner to learn, owing to its fast application.

After all, aren't we all in the same situation of finding enough time for our
hobbies and crafts in this busy, hectic lifestyle we lead. So for so little
time spent, you can get such gorgeous results.

Silk Ribbon Embroidery Tutorial - Jonquils

Jonquils - Narcissus Tazetta - ( tazetta an Italian word meaning small cup )
Jonquils blooms are in white, cream and yellow, and have a lingering perfume.

Silk Ribbon Embroidery Jonquils stay in bloom forever.

I have created these flowers in 4 mm. ribbon and as a
suggestion it is best that the ribbon being used has a
slight stiffness to it. This will help when forming the
petals.
When Embroidering such small flowers, it is just as important
to work the ribbon stitches around a centre as you would
with a wider ribbon.
The position the needle is brought up for each petal, will determine
the way each will form.
Also, slide the needle under the ribbon each time to flatten out
your ribbon as much as possible.

Step 1. Using 4 mm Green Ribbon
create the framework for your flowers. I have added the stems
by tightly twisting the ribbon and taking the needle through the
ribbon to hold it down. Add a few long Ribbon Stitch Leaves,
to approx. half way up the stems.

More leaves can be added when the flowers are completed,
if you feel it is needed to balance out the embroidery.

Step 2. The flowers consist of
6 petals, coming to a point at the tip.
(As shown previously, pull the ribbon away
from the hoop to make them pointed.)
The centres are one French Knot in yellow 4 mm ribbon.
Add a few buds with a single ribbon stitch, with green
thread back to the main flower.
Add some more leaves at this point if you wish.

Silk Ribbon Embroidery Tutorial - Tulips

TULIPS

Simply constructed in Ribbon Stitch, the effect of the petals are changed by
using Side Ribbon Stitch. Instead of taking the needle through the centre of
the ribbon, place the eye of the needle on the left or right seam of the ribbon.
As the needle is pulled through the ribbon curls toward the entry point, thus
giving the petal a slight rolled edge. As with Iris the leaves are stitched in the
same manner. With a fold, curled, straight, or twisted.

Step 1: Using a side stitch for the centres.

Step 2: Make 2 more ribbon stitches for the outer
petals, just slightly shorter length than the centre.

Step 3: The stem is tightly twisted ribbon as in the iris.
next add some leaves.

Using a hand dyed ribbon, the colours can be changed as you progress to the
outer petals. Even to the point that the ribbon can be cut into sections, so
you have the variance in colour needed at each step.

Hint: By placing for eg. a toothpick or thin crochet hook over the ribbon stitch,
wrapping the ribbon over the toothpick and pulling through, the ribbon is slightly raised and has more curl for the tip of the petal. ( also prevents the ribbon from pulling too tight ).

I have had to work this in a 7 mm ribbon to show the detail in the photos.
Believe me it looks a lot better in 4 mm. ribbon.
As above if using 4 mm. ribbon, use a spare needle to shape the ribbon around.

Silk Ribbon Embroidery Tutorial - Loop Flower

Flowers made in Loop Stitch

You may use 2, 4, 7 or 13 mm. Ribbon to make Loop Flowers.
If you wish mark a circle for the centre of the flower,
approximately the size of the bead or
pearl that will be added on completion.
( Using an erasable pen ) Naturally, you need to increase the
centre with the size of ribbon being used. This is needed to allow
room for the threaded ribbon and allows for the petals to be flat.
Also mark the position of each petal.

If using this diagram, the ribbon comes through the outside mark
of the circle, is taken over the rod and put back down inside the
circle.

Hint: Cut 2 lengths of dowel ( approx. 10 cms in length ) to work this stitch. Sand the ends well, so as not to snag the silk ribbon. Chop sticks can be used, but they are not of a consistent width, so petals sizes can vary. Loop Stitch is done with a continual flow of ribbon and is easy for the ribbon petals to move, as you are working on them. Because of this I use the dowel rods. The loops are kept of an even size and it stops the previous stitch pulling through.

Step 1: Take Ribbon from outside of circle over the rod, to the inside of circle. Take care the ribbon is completely flat. Flatten out at the base, by running the needle under it. As in Ribbon Stitch tutorial. Keep tension on the ribbon, so that it is firm around the rod. If you do this everytime, the petals will all be of the same size.
Step 2: Repeat this step with the 2nd. rod.

Step 3: Remove 1 st. rod, for use in 3rd petal. Keep working in this pattern till all loops are done.

Step 4: All petals done stitch down the ribbon end
at the back and add a pearl centre.
Other options: Small cluster of seed beads, French Knots in Thread or Ribbon. This flower is in 7 mm. Ribbon. ( 6 Petals ) If using 4 mm. ribbon the flower would be smaller or have more petals.

Have some fun with this stitch.
There is not one particular flower I use this stitch
for, but in Australia Impatiens come to mind.
Imitate by making it a smaller size with 5 petals.
With a loose French Knot Centre.

Silk Ribbon Embroidery Tutorial - Small Iris

As I mentioned in the earlier lesson
on the Bearded Iris, this is a more
petite version of an Iris in 4 mm. ribbon.

Step 1: Make a loose detached chain for the lower petal.

Step 2: If you wish change over to another colour or use the same one.
Make Two Ribbon Stitches to the side as above, leaving a area in the middle.

Step 3: Take three Ribbon Stitches upwards,
using the open area in the centre.
This will cover where the side stitches have begun.

Step 4: Thread on 4 mm Yellow Ribbon,
and make One Ribbon Stitch into the Detached Chain, Lower Petal.

Step 5: Make stems with tightly rolled 7 mm. Green
Ribbon, straight or folded Ribbon Stitch Leaves as in the
earlier lesson.

Bud: Overlap three Ribbon Stitches for the bud, and place
some small Ribbon Stitches in green around them.
( I much prefer to do the leaves and stems for the Flower
in 7 mm.and change to 4 mm. for the stem and Bud Calyx. )

This is a rather simple flower to do and if in a grouping as an Iris Bulb would be
looks great.

Silk Ribbon Embroidery Tutorial - Iris

Creating Irises in Silk Ribbon

As you would no doubt see in the bulb catalogues, Irises are available in so many varieties these days. The following is my version of a Bearded Iris.

This is being stitched with pieces of my own hand dyed 7 mm Ribbon.

Step 1: Two Ribbon Stitches downwards, slightly crossing.

Step 2: Two Ribbon Stitches coming from the Centre,
with a slight curve.

Step 3: With the option of a second coloured ribbon,
three ribbon stitches, facing up.

Step 4: With the same ribbon as Step 1 - place 1
loose ribbon stitch, 3/4 of the way up. Press down
with your fingers on the already formed petals,
to stop them pulling as you take the needle and
ribbon through. One French Knot with 4 mm.
Yellow Ribbon. ( Be careful when placing this Knot
that it does not go through the other ribbon stitches. )

Step 5: 7 mm. green ribbon coming from under
the flower, give it a tight twist and place the needle
through the base into the material, as in a ribbon
stitch. You may wish to take some matching thread
through in places to hold it flat on the fabric.
Make a folded Ribbon Stitch for one leaf.
This is done by stitching down with the matching
thread, and then folding over and completing as normal.

Step 6: Then for variety add some straight leaves, pulling the
ribbon away to create a point. Many more leaves can
be added, than I have done. This would also be the case if
you were stitching a group of Irises.

Next blog, we shall delve into more delicate irises in 4 mm. ribbon.

Hint: Should you have a Bulb Catalogue on hand they are excellent to give detail
and colour suggestions of the flowers.

SRE - Running Stitch / French Knot Combination

Using this combination stitch

from the Mon Francais Jardin Kits

This Combination Stitch has many uses- Sweet Little Roses, Small Sprays of Flowers,
can be used to decorate a border in Crazy Patch, excellent to use in Monograms,
and so many other possibilites.

A delicate stitch and well worth the effort to master.
Once again I am demonstrating this with a 7 mm. Ribbon
for easier viewing, but this is mostly worked in a 4 mm.
Using variegated ribbon, is very effective also, with the changes
of colour and tone through the completed flower ( as above ).

Taking the ribbon around the tip of the needle for the French Knot part of the Combo, then make small running stitches with your needle down the centre of the ribbon.
The point of the needle is taken through the ribbon where it has been brought through the
fabric. Check if the French Knot is still formed, if not give the needle a few twists to form
again. Allow the pleats to compact down onto the fabric, hold these in place with your
fingernail as you pull the needle through.

Take this step very slowly at first when you are beginning, keeping an eye on the length of
ribbon as it can easily twist at this point and knot up.
( Refer to French Knot Lesson earlier )

If you pull the ribbon too far, it will pull all the way through.
( Leaving the ribbon unuseable).
Once the knot is sitting firmly in the centre, I complete it with a holding stitch through the centre in matching sewing thread.
This holds the flower firm , if it gets snagged and saves on tears.
You have the option of adding a small seed bead to the centre.

Another form of this is Running Stitch / Colonial Knot Combination.
Personally I prefer French Knot, as I feel it sits lower down in the centre of the flower.

Viola in Silk Ribbon Embroidery

As I promised in my earlier posting of Pansies in SRE,
this is my version of a Viola flower.
Please keep in mind that I have worked this in
7 mm. ribbons to make it easier to see on your monitors.
I feel these would be so much more delicate and
effective in a 4 mm. ribbon.

For the purpose of stitching this flower I have marked out a circle with a diameter of 20 mm.

Step 1: Three Ribbon Stitches in Purple.1 st. - 1 o'clock
2 nd. - 11 o'clock3 rd. - 10 o'clock slightly overlapping the previous one.
Keep the Ribbon Stitches as rounded at the tips as possible, shaping them around your fingernail.

Step 2: Complete Two Ribbon Stitches in Cream, with the tip of the petal just outside the marked circle.1 st. - Between 2 and 3 o'clock2 nd. - Between 9 and 10 o'clock.
Change over to Lemon Ribbon
3 rd. - 5 o'clock4 th. - 7 o'clock. Making these slightly longer than the previous two.

With a single strand of black embroidery thread , make small straight stitches from the centre of the flower.Next with cream or lemon 7 mm. place a single wrap French Knot in the centre.

Leaves are longer and narrower ( than the pansies ) in 7 mm. Green in Ribbon Stitch.
Bud - 1 Ribbon Stitch downwards,Sepals 4 mm Green Ribbon Stitch, through the bud and angling out.
Lastly twist the ribbon and take it down as a straight stitch behind the flower petals. Or use
the other option of stem stich in a matching green thread.

Should you wish to try this flower in 4 mm. ribbons try a circle with a diameter of 10 mm.

Hints - Undoing Knot in Ribbon

Just noticed the bougainvillea in flower. Looks beautiful,
pity they have to be so thorny.
While working on an embroidery I got a knot in my ribbon,
so I thought I would pass this hint on.
This can happen at times either, when you want to take out
a previous stitch or have made a slight error.
You may have already realised how to do
this, but incase there is someone out there, this may be of help.
This saves your ribbon, as leaving the knot in will definitely show
in your work.

You will notice a curved pocket on the lower edge of
the ribbon. Take your Chenille Needle, eye end in backwards through this pocket.

Rethread the ribbon through the eye of the needle
and pull it back through. You will have a small hole, but with some manipulating
this will close over.

Pansy in Silk Ribbon Embroidery

September heralds the arrival
of Spring in the Southern Hemisphere

which may sound strange to readers from other countries.

The garden centres will be filled with punnets of spring flowering annuals and bulbs will be sprouting.
Where we live it will short lived. ( Enjoy it while we can, summer is just around the corner )
My hometown of Toowoomba is well known for its annual Carnival of Flowers,
where the Spring Flowers are in their full glory. These photos are taken in the
Botanical Gardens. The Carnival attracts visitors from all over Queensland,
Interstate and Internationally.

This is something that I miss here in Rockhampton
as the temperatures get a lot higher, and limits me to what I can grow in my garden.
I thought that I would contribute the next few weeks to Spring Bulbs and Flowers in Silk Ribbon Embroidery. The colours are so vibrant and Silk Ribbon Embroidery lends itself well with the many colours available. A great way to keep Spring in your home all year round. Enviromentally friendly, no water needed.

The Pansy Embroidery above is one of many ways in which you can do them. I have worked this with a 7 mm. Ribbon. The larger the flower the more ribbon stitches you will need to fill the area. The actual size of this is 20 mm's. Should you wish to make a smaller flower take the size down and if using a 7 mm. you should only need 8 ribbon stitches to complete as shown above.

The following example is a fuller version and usingBegin by marking a small circle with your water erasable pen or a pencil.
With your Ribbon Stitches keep your nail on them as pulling the needle
through, you want them as full and rounded at the tip as possible.

Step 1: Place 3 Ribbon Stitches ( 10, 12 and 2 o'clock)
Fill the 2 spaces in between.( 11 and 1 o'clock )

With the 2 nd. colour place two Ribbon Stitches as shown.

Now: - 1 Ribbon Stitch at 6 o'clock and 2 more in the spaces at 7 and 5 o'clock

Add 2 Leaves in Ribbon Stitch also. A French Knot in 7 mm.
Golden Yellow. Some markings in Black Embroidery Thread.
Stem Stitch in Green for the stem of the bud. 1 Ribbon Stitch
hanging downwards with 2 smaller Green Ribbon Stitches
cupping the bud.

Take some time to experiment with these, they are well worth
the effort and are an excellent addition to your embroideries.

Silk Ribbon Embroidered - Hankie Cushion

This is a beginners project,
which can be an excellent way to display those vintage hankerchiefs you have tucked away in the cupboard. Instead of leaving them there for the moths or to yellow, why not get them out in full view.

These are some of my special ones, passed on to me from my Mother and Grandmother or given
to me as a gift. Some have crocheted edges, but if you are short of these add some fine lace trims.

- Running Stitch / Colonial Knot Combination

Cut them into triangles or other shapes and make a crazy patch surface for your Ribbon Embroidery. If they are very fine you may wish to place them over some poplin or hankie linen
so it is not so transparent. Then place a layer of pellon at the back of this and hand tack it on.

- Ribbon Stitch -

(I always do the tacking in a bright colour, easier to find when you need to pull it out. )

The decorative stitches should cover all the edges and this will hold the surface together.

- Detached Chain Stitch Flowers

You can then add decorative stitches over the seams or through the laces. Go through your odds and ends in the sewing box. Suitable items, lace motifs, beads, charms, sequins etc.
Maybe there are some that hold special memories. they can be in full view instead of tucked away.

The flowers I have added to this are simple ones in Detached Chain, Ribbon Stitch, Spider
Web Rose and Running Stitch / Colonial Knot Combination. Should you be more enthusiastic
or advanced, you may wish to include more detailed ribbon embroidery and stitching..

When you are satisfied with your effort, make it up into a cushion. I have added a double
poplin frill with a wide lace inserted.

This idea could also be used to make up a lingerie bag.

Hints for Stitching.

HINTS:

Keep in mind when choosing a needle size.
The point of the needle is creating the whole in the fabric
for the eye and ribbon. Should you be having difficulty with
getting the needle through the fabric, look at a larger Chenille Needle.
I use mainly 18 and 20 for most of my stitching.

The grip pads as shown above are a good item to have in your sewing kit
or if you have a grip pad for opening bottles. Should you have sweaty hands
or a bulky area, gripping the needle with one of these pads
makes it much easier to pull through.

SILK RIBBON EMBROIDERY HINTS

This will be an ongoing feature of this blog.
I have many things that I have learnt from experience and the hard way.

Hopefully, some or even one of these hints may make your Stitching more enjoyable and proceed more smoothly.

Always cut both ends of your ribbon at an angle. This is not just as an aid while stitching, but also for the preservation of your work.

Keep a nail emery board in your sewing kit. A jagged nail can easily catch on a thread in your silk ribbon and cause damage.
Not a happy ending if you have already stitched the flower.

Hints: Pre Wash the ribbons, before starting.

Most ribbons are colourfast, but at times there may be just 1 that isn't,
and is safer to do this, than risk the damage to your finished
Embroidery.

How to do- Spider Web Rose in SRE

This petite flower has so many applications.
Simple and quick to complete.

Best worked in 4 mm. ribbon, although it can be done in 2 mm or 7 mm.
If you are using 7 mm. increase the number of spokes to 7 or more also enlarge
the circle to allow for the width of the ribbon. You will end up with a much larger flower,
but personally I feel, this one looks best in a smaller ribbon.
The appearance can be changed by how much of a twist you put in the ribbon.
Also a two tone rose, by changing the ribbon on the outside of the spokes.
Or even placing a bead / pearl in the centre can give a different look.

( For example imagine a cream silk fabric, deeper cream silk ribbon with a pearl centre )
How rich would this look for a Christening Gown.

As it has an uneven number of spokes, the weaving of the ribbon will alternate
and covers the thread as you go.
In these photos I have used blue and red as an example to make it easier to
distinquish the ribbon and threads.

When working this the thread is colour matched as close to the ribbon as possible.

As a beginner, you may be more cofident by marking the circle and placing the positions of the spokes with an erasable pen. With the matching sewing thread, make the 5 spokes coming
from the centre and stitch down at the back of the fabric / pellon backed.

Thread your needle with silk ribbon, bring it through at the centre of one of the spokes. Stitch down the tail at the back with the thread. This needle can then be left at the back, till the rose
is completed, or if you are concerned, knot and cut it off.

Hold the ribbon needle between your fingers and give the ribbon a twist, curling the ribbon.
The idea is that the ribbon is taken over and under the spokes, and because it is an odd
number of spokes, as you weave the ribbon, the cotton spokes are hidden.

Manipulate the ribbon into position with your fingers and the needle so that it spreads evenly
around the spokes.

As you begin move the ribbon into position, covering the centre of the spoke.
At this point you have the option of changing to another
colour ribbon. If you wish to do this, make sure that you continue on in the same
sequence that you ended off the first ribbon.
Continue in this manner until the spokes are completely covered, then take the needle
through to the back and stitch the ribbon tail down.
Take extra care that you do not catch the fabric as you are doing this. You only want to
slide the needle between the fabric and spokes.

The ideal way to replicate a rose, is that the centre will be tighter than the outside petals.

These photos are just a small example of the way the Spider Web Rose can be used.
They have be made with a lot more twisting of the ribbon, than the one above.

The leaves are ribbon stitch, buds detached chain stitch.

All it takes is a little inspiration and practice.

French Knots in Ribbon SRE

FRENCH KNOTS

This is executed the same way as if you were using thread.

But for those who have never tried, here it is with some photos to help you.

Take the ribbon as shown and wrap it around the needle usually between 1 and 3 times.
Depending on how large you want the knot to be.

Hold the ribbon coming from the needle, so the wrap does not loosen off.
Take the needle down next to where the ribbon came through the fabric.

Put your finger over the ribbon and as you are pulling the needle through, let it slide over
your finger.
Because it will curl slightly, it is very easy at this stage for it to knot.
This allows you to keep a close eye on the ribbon as you are pulling.
Ribbons knotting at this stage is not good, and troublesome to undo.
Practise will make perfect.

A closer look at the knot when completed
should have a centre opening where the needle has pulled through.

You are able to give this a firm pull at the end. If you have not taken the ribbon through
the same hole at start and finish, it will not pull through.

The stitch is ideal for the centres of a flower if you do not wish to use beads.
Also to work full flowers or as a fill in decoration.

These are just French Knots in cream 4 mm Silk Ribbon
to fill in the spaces.

Tutorial - Glasses pouch

Hello to you all.

Sorry I have been a little lax lately, but have started reorganising my studio following the Craft Show. Previously, I was using the room for storing supplies and teaching, along with my computer area. I have decided to put my sewing room and this together, eliminating a lot of back a forth from one end of the house to the other. We all know how much we tend to accumulate in the way of supplies in our sewing rooms, so this is taking much longer than I expected.

Anyway I would like to share my tips for making a Glasses Pouch. I find this the best way as all seams are hidden and no need to stitch bias around the edges to join it together. Keep in mind I have only created this one from scraps in the cupboard and when I get more organised shall create a new one with Ribbon Embroidery embellishing the front.

The first step is to make yourself a pattern template. Place the type of glasses you are making this for on a sheet of paper and allow 3 cms ( 1 inch ) each side for seams and movement. then double this width allowing for front and back.
As per photo have the top cut at an angle. Making it easier to reach the glasses in the pouch. Cut two pieces 1 lining, 1 fabric. ( Also an option is to cut 1 of Pellon - for padding ) Measurement of this pattern : Width 20 cms. ( 8 inches ) Height - 17 cms. ( 6 3/4 inches ) Shorter side angling down to 13 cms. ( 5 inches ) You will need to adapt this to suit.

Step 1:
With Right Side facing, pin across the top seam, leaving a gap as shown.
Stitch in these 2 places. Turn fabric & lining back to right side facing and
press the seam.

Step 2: Take the shorter side of the pouch and pin to the opposite side
( making a tube shape ) .

Step 3:
Next bring the higher side of the main fabric across to go over these pins and repin so that the whole side seam can be stitched.

Step 4: The only opening now should be the gap you have left at the top in step 1.

Turn the pouch right side out through this gap and slip stitch this seam over. Press the whole pouch. The seams should be fully enclosed.

How to make a FIVE PETAL FLOWER
( or Gathered Ribbon Flower )
A very simple flower to add to your list of achievements.

Put simply the petals are formed by making small tacking stitches on the ribbon in a box pattern & gathered up to form a circle, with a bead or french knot centre.

Step 1. Cut off a length of ribbon ( eg. 7 mm. approx. 15 cms. )
The length of ribbon will be determined by the ribbon width and fullness
you wish to have in the petal.

Step 2. Mark out the ribbon into 5 equal areas.
I then mark with small dots with an erasable pen.

Step 3. With matching sewing thread, begin at one end of the ribbon,
by overstitching the thread. This prevents the thread from pulling
straight through when you are gathering up the flower.

Step 4. Stitch as per this photo. Most important the thread has to
loop over the ribbon onthe same edge you start your tacking.
If you miss 1 of these it will not gather up.

Step 5. When all stitching is done, gently pull the thread, sliding the ribbon along the thread.
Arrange the petals out flat, you may have to untwist some. Must be 5 petals. Make
a few firm stitches in the last petal to stop it unravelling.

Step 6. Stitch both ribbon ends together. The flower then can be stitched
down to your fabric or make a opening in the fabric and push the tails
through ( this being the neater option)

Step 7. Make small stitches to hold it down and then place a bead or
french knots in the centre.

A variation - Small flower made with
10 mm Cascade House Bias Silk Ribbon.

When Stitching I have allowed the coloured edge to be on the outside petals
as per illustration above. Resulting in a petite cream flower with a
darker pink on the edge of the Petals.

I have made a denim cover from an empty coffee container, and embellished it
with 5 Petal Flowers using a craft ribbon with a metallic edge.

Silk Ribbon Embroidery, SRE

Silk Ribbon Embroidery ( SRE )
has been practised since the 17th. Century.
It fell out of favour for some time, BUT since the late 1990's is back in style.
These days there are many types of ribbon to choose from, with a wide variety in colours, textures and widths. Silk is the most suitable because of it's soft texture and shapes well, but other types can be effective in different situations.
One of the options you have is Cascade House Silken Ribbon ( 4 mm. only ) made from cow's milk.
Protein is extracted from casein that is finally woven into a ribbon. It looks like silk,
feels like silk and
stitches like silk at a slightly lower cost.

When you are first learning this technique, use a fabric with a weave that will allow the needle and ribbon to pull through easily. I find for my beginners that a linen is the best to use, the threads move aside well and still looks effective. On a more advanced project you cannot beat Dupion Silk.
The look with the Silk Ribbon and Silk Fabric is rich and luxurious, and the colours *********
You can use satin, cotton, organza, velvet, denim, moire and other silk blends, but take care as
the threads pull in some fabrics.

Inspiration:
You may be a person who requires a kit, pattern and supplies all chosen for you, OR
you may find inspiration around you. Once you start on SRE, it is amazing how it can open your
eyes to flowers, nature and art you see each day. You may find ideas in a book , your garden,
scrapbooking pages, ceramic tiles, in a piece of fabric, or on a greetings card.

adding an extra dimension to your work. With the addition of embroidery stitches,
embellishments such as lace, buttons, beads, transfers, sequins etc. you have
a beautiful way of creating your own style and design.
This to me is a more useful and enjoyable way of learning new stitches than in our
school days with a sampler. You can go wild with colour and choices.

( sorry I am not one - only from lacking in time)
but ribbon embroidery can also be applied here. The embellishments that you are purchasing can be handmade with so many more options just from scraps you may have in your kitty. Five Petal Flower is one such flower.

Ribbon Stitch, Daisy, Examples

Ribbon Stitch ( Japanese Ribbon Stitch )
A basic stitch that enables you to create a wide variety
of flowers, leaves even insects..
Can be executed with ribbons from 2 mm up by adjusting the size
of the chenille needle to suit.

Daisy Ring Introductory Kit

Thread your needle, bring the needle up to the front at the point of the first stitch.
Move the needle under the ribbon to straighten it out as much as possible.

Place the needle in the centre of the ribbon, at the length that you require
your petal to be.

Pull the needle through slowly, I place my left ring finger on the ribbon at this time.

This helps to not pull too tight and enables you to stop
the length of ribbon twisting.

Should you want the petals to be rounded at the tip, use your
fingernail for shaping as you pull the ribbon through.

If a more pointed end is needed pull the needle and ribbon to the right away from the worked
petal.

If making a full flower continue around the full circle. Place a bead or french knots in
the centre.

Notice the change once this is added.

Making a folded stitch, is a simple case of inserting the needle

to the left or right edge of the ribbon, thus it twists
a little as you pull it
through

Ribbon Stitch Hints and Variations

Moulding the shape of the petal:

Rounded petals are acheived by holding the ribbon down with
your fingertip and shaping the ribbon outer edge around your nail
as you are pulling it through. ( Also prevents you from pulling too tight )
Pointed petals- by holding the ribbon stitch firm with your finger, pull the ribbon
through and pull it to the right ( go gently until you get the required tip )
Pulling the ribbon to the side or downwards a little will give it a small curl
or place the needle through to one side of the ribbon will create a folded
ribbon stitch.

Enjoy your time working with Silk Ribbon, but remember you are imitating
nature, and even nature has imperfections in its work.
